Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film written and directed by James Cameron, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver. The film is set in the mid-22nd century. Humans have depleted Earth's natural resources, leading to a severe energy crisis. The Resources Development Administration (RDA) mines for a valuable mineral – unobtanium – on Pandora, a densely forested habitable moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi – a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. Dr. Grace Augustine, an exobiologist, discovers a Na'vi child and becomes attached to it. Seeing this as a threat to the mining operation, the corporation sends a team of mercenaries – led by Colonel Miles Quaritch – to capture the child and destroy its clan. Dr. Augustine and other scientists flee with the child and its mother, but during their escape one of the scientists is killed and Augustine's group is captured by militarized RDA guards. Quaritch's second in command, Trudy Chacón, condemns the colonel's recklessness after witnessing his attempt to kill god-like creatures called Toruk (a mythical winged predator central to Na'vi lore) as a show of power. Quaritch questions the expense of Dr. Augustine's research, but is reminded by Chacón that funding will terminate if he fails to make a profit on his investment. To regain control, Quaritch instructs his soldiers to arrest Dr. Augustine and lock down the human colony. He takes the child prisoner and forcibly disperses the clan into the mining encampment, angering Na'vi chieftain Omati, who sends warriors to secretly free them. Chacón, witnessing the Na'vi's effectiveness during combat training, questions Quaritch's motives. She allies herself with the Na'vi in an effort to undermine Quaritch's authority. As tensions escalate between the humans and the Na'vi, Quaritch orders "recruitment" of unwilling Na'vi into the RDA by force. Dr. Augustine implores the Corporation to stop Quaritch from attacking her people, but learns that he will get his way in perpetuity per his contract. Quaritch's forces destroy several Na'vi totems, severely disfiguring Omati. At the same time, Augustine's team demonstrates their suitability to communicate with the Na'vi by teaching the infant Na'vi to communicate via sign language. Despite her misgivings about human colonialism, Augustine decides to influence the Na'vi into helping the RDA construct an airstrip. During a ground attack, a soldier fires at tree containing a number of Na'vi including clan leader Omati and his wife. The tree falls onto Quaritch's vehicle, crushing him and triggering a cave-in that traps them in an underground cave network. cfa1e77820
